Can you remove PPF at home?

You can, but it is slow, it needs a heat gun and patience, and on a resprayed panel it can pull the paint. For most people, having it removed at the shop costs less than fixing one mistake.

In our bay · Davie, FL

The method

  1. Wash the panel so nothing scratches while you work.
  2. Warm the film with a heat gun or a steamer until it is pliable, never hot enough to touch the paint.
  3. Lift a corner with a plastic edge, never a blade.
  4. Pull slowly at a low angle, keeping the film warm as you go.
  5. Remove adhesive residue with an adhesive remover made for automotive paint, then wash again.

Where it goes wrong

When to bring it in

Film older than its warranty term, any panel that may have been repainted, or a full-body removal. We remove, decontaminate, inspect the paint and, in most cases, install new film the same visit.

Can PPF be done on a matte finish?
Yes, with matte PPF. Clear gloss film on matte paint would make it shiny; matte PPF keeps the factory satin look while adding rock-chip protection, self-healing and stain resistance that matte paint desperately needs. Full answer →
How much does it cost to install PPF on a Tesla Model Y?
A Model Y is a medium vehicle in our matrix: Partial Front $1,099, Full Front $2,199, Track Package $2,799, Full Body $5,850 in Ceramic Pro Urban. Full Front and Full Body include a $549 Ceramic Pro coating. Full answer →
Should I get paint protection from the dealer?
No. Buy the car from the dealer and bring it to a specialist for protection. The dealer package is applied in a service lane, sold at a premium in the finance office, and rarely includes real paint correction or a warranty that means anything. Full answer →
What are the disadvantages of paint protection film?
It costs more than a coating, it depends on the installer more than any other product we sell, and it lasts a decade rather than forever. Those are the disadvantages. Yellowing and peeling are disadvantages of cheap film, not of paint protection film. Full answer →
