How it works
A ceramic coating is a liquid polymer, mostly silicon dioxide, that cross-links with the clear coat as it cures and becomes a hard, glass-like layer a few microns thick. The surface it leaves is smoother and denser than paint, so water beads and runs, dirt does not key into the pores, and UV and acids have to get through the coating before they reach the paint.
What it does
- Blocks UV fade and oxidation.
- Stops love bugs, bird droppings, tree sap and sprinkler water from etching.
- Adds hardness against light wash marring. Ceramic Pro 9H is rated 9H on the pencil scale.
- Makes washing fast: most dirt rinses off before you touch the car.
- Deepens gloss, especially on dark colors.
What it does not do
It does not stop rock chips, keys, carts or door dings. That is paint protection film. It is not a substitute for washing. And it is only as good as the paint under it: a coating locks in swirls and chips, which is why we correct the paint first, every time.
Why prep is most of the job
The coating is the last hour of a two-day job. Before it: a decontamination wash, iron and tar removal, clay, then machine polishing until the paint is defect-free under inspection lights. Then panel wipe, then the coating, then it cures in a climate-controlled bay. Skip the prep and you have a shiny car with every swirl sealed in permanently.
