The drawbacks, honestly
- Color range. Vinyl comes in hundreds of colors and finishes. Colored and matte PPF comes in a curated set. If you need a specific shade, wrap wins.
- Price. Colored PPF is a protection film with pigment; it costs more than a color-change wrap for the same car. Full-car matte PPF starts at $5,549.
- Install tolerance. Colored film shows a bad edge more than clear film. It needs wrapped edges, trim off, and a clean bay, or you see it.
- Repair. A damaged panel means replacing the film on that panel. Color matching between batches is good but not guaranteed years later.
What you get in exchange
- 8 mil of urethane. Rock chips stop at the film.
- Self-healing topcoat. Swirls and wash marks disappear with heat.
- Stain resistance that matte vinyl does not have.
- Removal that leaves the factory paint untouched, which matters at resale.
Our recommendation
Keeping the car, want a matte or satin version of what you have: matte PPF. Want a bold color and plan to change it in a few years: wrap, and put clear PPF on the front bumper and hood over the wrap.
